The Silk and Gold exhibition from the Museum's collections was on display under the VI Congress of Ethnographers and Anthropologists of Russia.
19 masterpieces of traditional weaving were selected from the collections of the Peter the Great Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography (Kunstkamera). The samples present methods of silk fiber handling and methods of silk peaces decoration worked out through the XVII-XIX centuries over various parts of Eurasia and Africa. When selecting the exhibition items it was established that the masterpieces of silk weaving, as a rule, include gold fibers - that resulted in the exhibition title Silk and Gold.
The exposition displays the most singular samples of Bukhara silk fabrics, Indian head covers and sari, Russian kerchiefs, Caucasian praying carpet, Afghan men's head cover, Chinese curtain and samite, women's skirts of continental South-East Asia, cloths of noble African man from Ghana, etc..
The unique silk and gold weaved items were handed over to the Museum by famous collectors - prince E.E. Ukhtomsky, G. Maier, S.M. and Y.I. Marr. Besides, they were delivered from the former Imperator's collections, the Imperator's Russian Geographic Society, former museum within A.L. Shtiglits School of technical drawing, as well as from ambassadorial and ceremonial donaries.
The displayed items were on the specialized textile exhibition for the first time.
